Trinity Sunday

27th May 2018

The Sunday after Pentecost is known as Trinity Sunday

We celebrate a mystery. Trinity means ‘three’, yet God is ‘one’: He is three Persons, one God.

It is a mystery because our language and concepts simply do not stretch that far into the infinite reality God is. We can only try our best to understand what has been revealed by God Himself. This is not a product of the human imagination, nor did we stumble upon this through clever logic; but something that Christ revealed to us in obedience to the Father:

Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me”. (John 17:21).

It is a truth which comes from the very mouth of God and in sending us out on our mission to bring Christ to others in a unity of Faith, He does so in a Trinitarian manner:

Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time”. (Matthew 28:19-20).

In the same way God is three Persons -Father, Son and Holy spirit- He is one Being, but only  in a relation of three. We are therefore called to be one in Him, but relating our entire selves with the three Persons.

We enter into communion with the Divine reality; a communion of love. It is in this sense that we were created precisely for ‘communion’, from which we derive the word for Church. It is here, where God Himself reaches out and touches our lives and immerses us in Him. This we call the life of grace.

When Jesus appeared to the disciples after His resurrection He breathed the Holy Spirit on them for one reason: to forgive sins (John 20:19-23). In other words, He restored them to the fullness of communion in Him. What had been damaged by sin, was now healed by Love -the Holy Spirit of God.

When our sins are forgiven through the Sacrament of Confession, we are reconciled again to God and Baptismal grace is restored once more to its pristine condition. Grace can now flow freely once again in our lives.

At Mass this Sunday we will recite the Creed. Let us pay close attention to the words, for they beautifully unfold for us centuries of our belief in our Triune God.

We will also worship God with these words we will hear recited during the Preface of Holy Mass. The Sacred Liturgy draws in some deep theology so that what we celebrate in mystery, we can contemplate in love:

For with your Only Begotten Son and the Holy Spirit

you are one God, one Lord:

not in the unity of a single person,

but in a Trinity of one substance.

For what you have revealed to us of your glory

we believe equally of your Son

and of the Holy Spirit,

so that, in the confessing of the true and eternal Godhead,

you might be adored in what is proper to each Person,

their unity in substance,

and their equality in majesty”.
